Entry Numero Uno

Soooooo.... here we go. This is my first dip into the world of blogging. I feel like there are certain pressures associated with this: 1) The blog homepage must be asthetically pleasing; 2) There must be a decent amount of comments from friends, family and randoms and (above all else) 3) I must be impecibly witty in all of my entries.....eek.
So this may or may not happen, but at least you'll be getting a little taste of what Kenya is like through my eyes.
Egad, a week from today I will be in Kenya. How weird. There is still soooooo much to do. 1. Figure out my future (i.e. what program stream I'm in), 2. Pack (so, I had a dream last night that I was at the airport to go to Kenya and I hadn't packed...hopefully this won't be the case on Sunday) and 3. ...er....I forget, but trust, there's a list that's like 500 miles long.

Apparently I'm all about the lists. (...it's the life sci influence....oh left brain.)

Anyway, I'd love to hear how you are all doing so please comment or email or whathaveyou.

,
Emily

first! weee!

I remember having those same packing (or rather not packing) dreams too! They are always so freaky, and in the dream I would try to figure out how it could still be okay and still go on the missions trip without having packed anything.

I'm super glad to hear how psyched you are about going! I do have one tidbit of advice/suggestion that I would like to give to you. It came from a missionary friend many years ago. Myself, and others whom I have continued the tradition with, have found it IMMENSELY helpful: If you can spare the room, pack a tiny bottle of Febreeze. It's not that you need to smell fresh while you're in Kenya. It just somehow always comes in handy... ^^

p.s. I'm not sure how it'll translate to QMO trips. But it seems to apply to all third world travelling :P

EMILY, i am so excited for you, and am counting down the days when you will be UP UP UP in the air
"flying in an airplane looking out the window watching the clouds go by"
WAY to much barney...(work can do that)
Have a great time, collect your memories and store them in the front lobe of your brain (if that part exists)
you are amazing

Hey Emily! Jambo Mzungu!

remembering being there I would recommend a few things... (although you're so head strong you'll probably ignore all this)

1. Don't drink the water (only from a bottle)
2. lift up the sheets on your bed before you crawl in...o yeah
3. Don't drink the water :)
4. Enjoy the Tusker (beer)
5. Eat Tilapia (it's amazing but looks gross - the brain is the best but the eyeballs are dicey)
6. Don't drink the water :>
7. Sunscreen, hand sanitizers and soap are your friends.
8. Safety is found in groups and humour is found in large groups of stupid people
9. i wouldn't recommend the WATER!!
10. Giardia is the most common waterborn parasite in the world...hint ( you know the water thing)
11. Cipro and Imodium are your real friends (if you disregard some of the above)
12. HAVE AN AMAZING TIME!!!!!!
13. but don't drink the water...

your humble friend and servant just trying lovingly to make a point....get it?

Pete (pedo viejo)
Good luck with the spanish dictionary translation of that!

JAMBO!

Hi Emily:

This is the 2nd time I've written - didn't have an account set up the first time! Glad to hear you've arrived safe & sound & are settling in! Obviously you're not drinking the water - "Uncle" Pete made that one 'crystal' clear didn't he??? Exciting just reading how things are going & knowing you're on your way to a tremendous experience! We'll be praying for you & I'm going to put the blog into the bulletin & perhaps you'll hear from some in the church! Hey kiddo - just a suggestion for those of us in the 'elderly age group'!! Could you increase your font size or bold the font as reading that tiny red typing on the black background caused a lot of squinting at this end!!!
Blessings
Karin

Hi Dearest Emily

Wow - what an adventure - and it has just begun. We are so excited for you. You do a terrific job of piecing together a colourful, vibrant picture of what you are experiencing - although I know the 'real thing' is probably beyond words.

I have printed a copy of your entries and your pictures for Grandma and Grandpa. Your message will also be shared with my class at school. So thanks for making our world a little bigger - and better by your good works.

Love
Auntie Jane
